THG has opened its doors for a special Evolver Prize 2017 exhibition featuring 100 artworks (instead of the usual 50) to mark the 100th edition of Evolver Magazine.

The overall winner was announced at the opening event. Artist Russell Denman won the prize of £1,000 and his artwork ‘Model Shelter No.1’ features on the front cover of the July/August edition of Evolver, the Wessex Arts and Culture guide.

100 cover artworks from artists, photographers and designers were selected out of 260 entries. There is a broad spectrum of artworks in different media exhibited at the gallery, all of which are for sale.

The winning artist Russell Denman commented, “Having my work shown in the Thelma Hulbert Gallery is a great privilege and winning the prize has also enabled my work to have access to a huge audience in peoples' homes on the cover of Evolver. This piece (Mountain Shelter) is a photograph of one of an ongoing series of sculptural models titled 'Protect and House', the series explores themes of shelter, home and its place in the landscape culturally and politically.”

Angela Blackwell, THG Curator added, “It was a great opening event with over 140 visitors turning out on a lovely sunny day.  We would also like to thank the auctioneers Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood auctioneers for generously sponsoring the exhibition. Don’t forget to come and vote for your favourite artwork to win the Visitors’ Choice prize!”

Evolver Prize 2017 (till 26 August 2017)Open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm. Free admission, donations welcome.
