THG is offering a guided exhibition talk and portrait drawing demonstration as part of their Winter art activities at the gallery.

The tour will be led by the highly respected West Country artist Ray Balkwill, SWAc. Based in Exmouth, his work is held in private collections and galleries all over the country. He was elected an Academician of the South West Academy in 2006 and is also a member of the St Ives Society of Artists. Ray is author of seven books, has made two art instruction films and is a regular contributor to ‘Artists & Illustrators’ magazine.

Ray commented,

"This special tour will explore the South West Academy's exciting new Winter Exhibition. It features the very best in creativity from around the region, focusing on paintings, photographs, prints and ceramics. From the rich diversity of styles on show I will be highlighting some of the key works in the exhibition, as well as discussing my own influences and techniques”

The portrait drawing demonstration will be led by award-winning SWAc artist Ken Cosgrove. Ken trained in the US and has a BFA in classical painting. He now works from his studio in South Devon. Ken’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in permanent and private collections in the US and the UK.

Ken said,

I will be working with a life model and will talk through the many aspects of portrait drawing in charcoal including set up and lighting, gesture, anatomy, expression and likeness.”
