Art Dayz - The Lost Art of Seaweed Pressing (afternoon)

12 June 2021

Details

Visit the Abode of Love on Exmouth's seafront for a family friendly art activity making seaweed pressings with Exmouth artist Anna Fitzgerald.

 2 – 4.30pm (there is another session 11am – 1.30pm)

£10* per bubble of up to 4 people. Limited to 8 places (2 bubbles). Booking essential.

Seaweed collecting was one of the few hobbies Victorian women were allowed to partake in. Exmouth was a popular place for seaweed pressing. The Parminter cousins of A La Ronde also produced seaweed pressings, they were classed not only as crafters but strong feminists.

All equipment will be provided – including your own seaweed press – and fact sheets on the history of seaweed collecting and pressing and the importance of seaweed collections in studying environmental change. This workshop will follow latest Covid guidance limiting numbers to no more than 8 people (2 bubbles) on each session. Attendees need to be comfortable with: standing for a couple of hours, lifting buckets, collecting seaweed (which might involve wading in the sea/rock pooling). Please come prepared for the weather.

Where to meet: Abode of Love, Exmouth seafront (there are steps off the main road down to the seafront bays - look out for our flags).

*please contact us if you cannot pay this fee due to extenuating circumstances following the Covid-19 pandemic
