The Wild Escape : THG secured major national funding for ‘The Wild Escape’ participatory project working with Allhallows Museum, Honiton Primary and the Blackdown Hills AONB.
Pupils aged 7-11 from Honiton Primary took part in a series of workshops led by sculptor Alistair Lambert at THG, Allhallows Museum and in the countryside of the Blackdown Hills AONB. The workshops took inspiration from THG’s exhibitions, Allhallows museum’s collections and the natural landscape. The young people and the wider school community devised and created an artwork using natural and reclaimed materials exploring our relationship to the natural world. The collective artwork – the Honiton Hippo went on a procession led by Honiton pupils through the town, past Allhallows, arriving at THG’s pocket park for Earth Day celebrations on 22 April 2023.
Our involvement in this project presents a ‘real-world’ opportunity to show our students the power of our CreATE Manifesto values at HCC. In particular, we want to use this opportunity to promote articulacy in our students, raise aware of the importance of cultural fluency and ensure that everyone feels they have a right to have their voice heard on topics that matter to them.
We want to give all of our students the chance to have meaningful encounters with practitioners and cultural institutions so that they can appreciate their value and why we need to engage with them to understand and shape our world for the better.
