Exhibition of prints by American artist Leonard Baskin.
Baskin was one of the universal artists of the 20th century. He was a sculptor of renown as well as a writer and illustrator. He was a prolific print-maker and is best known for his expressive and often dramatic black-and-white prints. Many of his prints and drawings served as preparatory studies for his imposing bronze and wood sculptures of animals and figures.
He is especially appreciated for his unique line quality and inventive woodcut techniques which he often used to illustrate collaborative book projects, including Ted Hughes’ ‘Crow’ collection of poetry.
Leonard Baskin (1922 – 2003) studied at Yale University School of Fine Arts. He founded the Gehenna Press in 1942 while at Yale, and in 1956 the press moved to Northampton, Massachusetts, where Baskin taught printmaking and sculpture. In 1974 he moved with his family near Tiverton in Devon, where he spent much of his time with Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath—who famously dedicated her poem titled Sculptor to him.
Baskin’s works feature in many national US collections including the Art Institute of Chicago, MOMA, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, National Gallery of Art among others.
