What’s On

Looking for Appearance

to

A contemporary painting perspective.

A unique opportunity to view contemporary and historic works where observation and personal processes are used to explore visual appearances.

Translating what is seen onto a flat surface is complex. These contemporary artists observe and paint directly from their subject, to question the elusive and beautiful appearance of the visible world. They are linked by their search for ‘visual evidence’ through drawing and painting, in response to what they see, think and feel.

Alongside contemporary works the exhibition will include important loans from private collections by Euan Uglow, Patrick George, Patrick Symons and Myles Murphy and founding artists of the Euston Road School (1937-1939) including Claude Rogers and Sir William Coldstream, linking to the artist Thelma Hulbert.  It was the group’s belief that art should be socially relevant and accessible, and its students needed to ‘look harder’ to question continuously what is seen in order to realise a painting.
