A contemporary painting perspective.
An exhibition of artists who work from what they can see to interrogate and celebrate the mystery of appearance.
This exhibition presents historical works alongside a selection of current analytical painting. Outlining Thelma Hulbert’s connection with the artist and one of the founders of the Euston Road School, Sir William Coldstream (1909 – 1987) and the need to ‘look harder’ to question continuously what is seen to realise a painting.
Looking and seeing triggers these artists into action. Realising what is seen is difficult and the process of painting or drawing what we truly see is complex and all consuming. These artists proceed with questions and the answers provide more questions, as what is seen is unknown, beautiful, and shifting. With sustained connection with the motif, they search for ‘visual evidence’ and their response to what is seen and felt becomes what we see.
